Iran: Oil tanker hits a mine in the Strait of Hormuz
An oil tanker has caught fire after striking a naval mine in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.
The incident reportedly caused an explosion, and a fire broke out in the vessel’s engine room, state-run Iranian media report. It is alleged that the tanker was attempting to transit the strait via an unauthorized route.
In recent times, there have been repeated reports of vessels encountering naval mines in the vicinity of the Strait of Hormuz.
Commercial traffic through the strait has been severely restricted since the United States and Israel launched attacks against Iran in February of this year, followed by recurring Iranian attacks on vessels.
