Israel: Ten arrested following settler violence
Ten people have reportedly been arrested by Israeli police following a series of high-profile incidents of settler violence in the occupied West Bank over the weekend.
Several arrests were made at dawn “following a number of serious violent incidents over the past weekend,” the Israeli police announced. Ten individuals are reported to have been taken into custody.
They are suspected of involvement in the acts of violence and of defying military orders. They are also suspected of illegal construction.
Last Thursday, an American photographer working for The Washington Post was assaulted and beaten by settlers. On Friday, a convoy of European diplomats was attacked, and a 78-year-old mayor from France was beaten.
The EU, the United States, and others have called on Israel to take action. Rights groups point out that crimes committed by settlers against Palestinians are rarely prosecuted by the Israeli authorities.
