Violent protests erupted on Sunday in Tirana, the capital of Albania. Riot police responded with tear gas.
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has rejected all demands for his resignation.
On Sunday, the protests in Albania entered their sixth day of violence. Government buildings were attacked, and the anti-regime demonstrations were followed by rioting, with banks and shops being destroyed.
The unrest in Albania began with student protests, directed in part at the country’s education system.
The students have since joined forces with various anti-government groups in protests addressing a broader range of societal issues. A construction project involving Jared Kushner—son-in-law of U.S. President Donald Trump—has sparked particular outrage.
However, Prime Minister Rama, of the Socialist Party, stated in a video recording on Sunday that “outside forces” are behind the protests—and that he has no intention of resigning.
