Pause in sanctions against Russia to last 60 days
The pause in the new US sanctions package against Russia will remain in effect for 60 days, according to Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The stated purpose is to "analyze" the potential impact on the global economy.
President Donald Trump’s decision to halt the sanctions—which target Russia’s fuel exports—was announced in an executive order on Friday. The move has drawn sharp criticism from senators and members of Congress, who had approved the legislative package in September.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has now commented on the pause in sanctions.
"The President wants to use this 60-day period to, in a sense, analyze what the implementation of both sanctions and tariffs would mean for the global economy—as well as the American economy," he told reporters.
