French President Emmanuel Macron is attempting to unite France in an address to the nation following a weekend of protests and acts of violence.

“We want to take action,” Macron says regarding the large-scale protests demanding better living conditions.

“I also understand the criticism from our students,” Macron continues, addressing complaints about the French education system.

He also states that police forces acted professionally during the protests, even though demonstrators have accused the police of using excessive force.

“I have asked them to provide information so that this does not happen again,” Macron says, referring to Saturday’s widespread and, in part, violent protests.

However, the president also emphasizes that full transparency regarding the actions of the French police is necessary.

At the same time, he asserts that “nothing justifies violence.”
