The change of power in Germany

Agreement on coalition agreement in Germany: “Trust us”

The German Christian Democrats in the CDU/CSU and the Social Democrats in the SPD have agreed on a coalition agreement that paves the way for Friedrich Merz to become the country’s chancellor, German media report.

The CDU leader’s promise is that the agreement will make Germany more stable, safer and economically stronger.

“Europe can trust Germany,” he says at a press conference.

German competitiveness will be strengthened, taxes will be lowered and migration policy will be changed. Merz talks about it taking at least five years to become a German citizen, that border controls will be strengthened and that an “offensive” of deportations will be carried out.

It has already been known that the new German government will make extensive investments in infrastructure and defense. In the latter initiative, Sweden is seen as a pioneer.

– We want to strengthen military service according to the Swedish model, he says, but adds that conscription will initially be voluntary.

Merz also says that he believes that the government will be in place the week after April 28.

Tasks: This is how the German ministerial posts are distributed

The new government coalition between the German Christian Democrats and the Social Democrats is ready and will be presented at a press conference at 3 p.m., several media outlets report.

According to sources for the country's largest newspaper Bild, the CDU/CSU will be allowed to appoint the interior and foreign ministers, while the SPD will control the finance, defense and justice ministries.

The coalition will be led by the Christian Democrat Friedrich Merz, who is expected to be elected Chancellor in May.
