Huge snowstorm warnings in the US – over 30 million affected

A huge snowstorm is expected to hit the East Coast of the US.

Over 30 million people have been warned.

And in New York, a travel ban has been issued.

New York looks to be hit hardest. Up to 45 centimeters of snow is expected to fall there until Monday evening. Mayor Zohran Mamdani has issued a 16-hour travel ban in the city.

This means that no vehicles are allowed on the city streets from 8:00 p.m. on Sunday to 12:00 a.m. on Monday, local time.

– New York City has not experienced a storm of this magnitude in the last decade, says Mamdani.

All residents are urged to stay indoors.

“No vehicles on the streets”

Both New York and New Jersey have declared a state of emergency and about a hundred members of the National Guard have been activated.

Governor Mikie Sherril of New Jersey expects “severe blizzard conditions throughout the state”.

– I therefore urge you to plan to stay off the roads, she says according to CBS News.

A number of schools have also been closed on Monday.

Weather services in the country state that the blizzard will start calmly on Sunday with some rain before hitting hard. Only during the evening, up to five centimeters of snow can fall – every hour.

Thousands of flights canceled

The gusts of wind can reach up to 25 meters per second and both trees and power lines can fall. Therefore, residents should also expect an imminent risk of power outages.

US Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, has said that federal resources are ready.

– We urge you to stay home, stay safe, stay warm and stay off the roads, she wrote on X.

On Sunday morning, Swedish time, over 3,000 flight departures had been canceled in the New York area.
