The ceasefire is being extended.

But it is unclear how long and when new talks can be held.

What happens now? Aftonbladet's foreign affairs reporter Nivette Dawod answers 3 questions about the uncertain situation between the US and Iran.

What has happened?

President Donald Trump states that the ceasefire is being extended for "three to five days".

Until then, Iran's, according to Trump, "fragmented leadership" must agree on a proposal from the US.

However, Iran has a different picture. The extension is pointless because the US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz continues. Mehdi Mohammadi, the Iranian president's advisor, claims on X that the US extension of the ceasefire is "a way to buy time for a surprise attack". He writes that Iran will now "take the initiative", it is unclear what that means.

What happens now?

Both parties are constantly coming up with new proposals. Behind the scenes, experts still believe in talks, but note that the parties' trust in each other is very low.

The website Axios writes that American and Pakistani mediators are waiting for word from Iran's supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei about the latest proposal from the US. Khamenei is also believed to be giving "clear instructions to the country's negotiators".

At the same time, Trump continues to threaten. He "expects to bomb" if no new agreement is reached with Iran, or if Iran opens the Strait of Hormuz.

What can we expect going forward?

The uncertainty continues. The moves are said to come from both sides, it seems to be part of the negotiation game. But the ceasefire is still in effect, no bombs are falling on Iran, no drones or missiles are being fired at Israel or neighboring countries.

It is likely that talks are taking place between the US and Iran at some level, especially since Trump set a timetable.

Officially, however, neither the US nor Iran have any travel plans to the mediator country Pakistan right now.
