Six people suspected of participating in a plot to carry out a coup d'état in Nigeria have been charged and are to stand trial in Nigeria.
The charges were presented before a federal court in the capital Abuja on Tuesday. This gave a new twist to rumors of a planned coup in Africa's most populous country, as the government had previously denied a plot.
Among those charged is a former major general, Mohammed Ibrahim Gana, and five other people with ties to the military.
Reports of coup plots have been rife in Nigeria since a number of military personnel were arrested for “disciplinary” offenses in the fall of 2025.
Nigeria has experienced a number of military coups since the country gained independence in 1960. After several totalitarian military regimes, the country was able to embark on a democratic path in 1999.
