Political situation in Nigeria

Africa's richest man promises to build large oil refinery

Several East African neighboring countries have joint plans to build a large oil refinery to reduce their dependence on the Middle East. According to the plan, oil from Congo-Kinshasa, Kenya, South Sudan and Uganda will be refined in a new refinery in Tanzania, writes Reuters.

If the countries can agree on this, Africa's richest man, Nigerian businessman Aliko Dangote, promises to build the refinery in four to five years.

- All of Africa should invest, says Dangote.

The new refinery in Tanzania will be identical to Dangote's refinery in Nigeria, according to the plan.

Kenyan English mockery not well received in Nigeria

A move by Kenyan President William Ruto is irritating many in Nigeria and elsewhere in Africa, writes the BBC. During a speech in Italy on Monday, Ruto boasted about the Kenyan school system.

“We speak some of the best English in the world. If you listen to a Nigerian speaking, you don’t know what they’re saying. You need a translator even when they speak English,” Ruto said, to laughter.

Critics say the move is rooted in colonial thinking. Both Kenya and Nigeria are former British colonies and have English as their official language, but English sounds completely different in each country. Nigeria has over 500 indigenous languages that influence the rhythm, intonation and accent of spoken English.
