Fighter pilots took selfies – collided in mid-air
Updated 12.47 | Published 12.19Two South Korean fighter jets collided in mid-air in 2021. Now an investigation has determined the cause: selfies.
“Unplanned maneuvers” to film and photograph were behind the accident, according to a report from a South Korean regulatory authority.
– We sincerely apologize to the public, says a spokesperson for the air force at a press conference according to Reuters.
One of the pilots reportedly wanted to document his last flight with his military unit. One plane is therefore said to have climbed sharply while tilting to improve the camera angle, while a pilot on another plane filmed and photographed.
The pilots survived the incident without injuries, but the plane suffered damage worth millions.
The air force now says it is taking measures to tighten security.
