Judge blocks new Virginia maps – Democrats appeal

A judge has blocked the redrawing of the electoral districts that were voted on in Tuesday's referendum in the state of Virginia, according to US media, after President Donald Trump called the vote "rigged".

Judge Jack Hurley invalidated all votes cast because he said the referendum was not announced on time and the question to voters was "clearly misleading", according to CBS.

The referendum's yes vote to redraw the electoral districts in favor of the Democrats could tip the congressional majority in the mid-term elections this fall, according to the Washington Post. Both Democrats and Republicans usually redraw electoral districts where they have local majorities to increase their party's chances in congressional elections.

Democrats in Virginia plan to appeal the judge's decision.

“Republicans lost and now they are trying to run over voters in court,” writes a group that campaigned for the redistricting, according to CNN.

Trump claims election fraud in the state of Virginia: “Rigged”

US President Donald Trump is accusing Democrats in the state of Virginia of fraud in a referendum on electoral districts. This is reported by AFP.

“A rigged election was held last night,” Trump writes on Truth Social, referring to the 2020 presidential election that he claims was stolen from him by Democrat Joe Biden. He has not presented any evidence for any of the accusations.
