The Defense Secretary reportedly believed that the Navy Secretary had mishandled the mission to develop the so-called "Golden Fleet." This includes what the administration has described as a new class of "battleships" named after President Trump.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has fired a number of top names from the Pentagon since the Iran war began. Although the Navy is participating in the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, Phelan is not directly involved in that operation, according to Bloomberg.
