Extreme heat moves east – warnings in the Balkans
Eastern Europe is next in line as the heat wave moves on. On the Balkan Peninsula, authorities are warning that the mercury will climb to 40 degrees in some places.
Weather warnings have been issued in several places in the Balkans. In both Bosnia and Albania, temperatures are expected to reach 40 degrees. Rescue services are working to put out fires on the peninsula, but there is no danger to life.
In war-torn Ukraine, authorities are struggling to prepare their already vulnerable electricity grid for the heat.
According to calculations made by AFP, at least 130 million people in Europe are in areas where temperatures are expected to rise above 35 degrees.
The intense heat wave has been blanketing Western Europe for about ten days. France has been the most affected, with several heat records broken.
