Sources: Burnham's radical economic plan changes the balance in the UK
Prime Minister Keir Starmer's likely successor Andy Burnham will give a speech next week outlining the details of a radical plan to move money and power from London to other parts of the country, writes The Times.
- It will be a completely new economic balance, a source close to Burnham tells the newspaper.
Burnham, who is also mayor of Manchester, has long argued that British politics' focus on growth in London and southern England has led to the northern parts of the country becoming dependent on subsidies from there.
Andy Burnham could become prime minister on July 20
Andy Burnham could be prime minister in the UK as early as July 20, writes The Independent.
The scenario is based on no other candidates standing as successors to Keir Starmer, who announced his resignation earlier this week.
Labour will elect a new party leader on July 17, but the prime ministership can only be formally handed over the next working day – that is, July 20.
