The change of power in the UK

Burnham is expected to ask for ten years to turn the UK around

Andy Burnham is expected to set out his economic vision for the UK on Monday, ahead of his expected assumption of office as prime minister in July. The Telegraph sees signs that he is aiming to lead the country through at least two terms and writes that he will say he needs a decade to transform Britain, reduce the power of the central government and move decision-making closer to the regions.

Burnham is expected to present plans for a “No 10 North” in Manchester, where parts of the Prime Minister’s Office will be moved from Westminster. Decisions on public spending will be transferred from civil servants in London to regional mayors.

According to The Times, the reform involves transferring parts of the state budget to local authorities. The aim is to raise living standards through investments in industry, housing and infrastructure.

The change of power in the UK — it's about the matter

  • UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation on 22 June 2026 after weak opinion polls and internal criticism.
  • Andy Burnham, former mayor of Manchester, was sworn into parliament the same day and is the clear favorite to take over.
  • Burnham has received the support of several heavyweight Labour politicians, including Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves and Starmer's closest aide Darren Jones.
  • Labour is expected to appoint a new party leader on 17 July and Burnham could formally become Prime Minister as early as 20 July if he becomes the sole candidate.
  • Burnham plans to present an economic plan to shift power and resources from London to other parts of the UK.
