They have died in homes, outdoors and in cars.

The heat wave in the United States in recent days has claimed lives.

In New Jersey alone, the heat is suspected to have caused at least 19 deaths since Thursday. According to the state's health director, Raynard Washington, people have died outdoors and in vehicles, but most at home.

- Unfortunately, many of these people were found in homes without air conditioning.

Governor Mikie Sherrill described the weather as “the hottest we’ve seen in over 14 years.”

Many places in the affected area have set heat records, with temperatures in some areas exceeding 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius).

The heat was followed by storms and thunderstorms that brought down trees and power lines. Up to 1.2 million customers were without power or were without power for some time in parts of the central, eastern and southern United States on Sunday.
