UN fears escalating violence by paramilitary RSF
The UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is demanding an urgent investigation into the paramilitary RSF's suspected abuses against the population of the city of el-Obeid in Sudan, writes AFP.
The council points to possible war crimes such as drone attacks on hospitals, widespread sexual violence and the use of starvation as a weapon.
The city is located in the Kordofan region and has been surrounded by RSF for several months. The UN fears that the residents may suffer similar violence as in al-Fashir, where a previous investigation concluded that the siege and capture bore the hallmarks of genocide.
The war in Sudan has been ongoing since 2023. Tens of thousands of people have been killed and millions forced to flee in the fighting between RSF and the Sudanese army.
Hundreds of children killed or injured in Sudan this year
More than 300 children have been killed or injured in the war in Sudan in the past six months, Unicef said according to the AP. Above all, it is drone attacks that the children have fallen victim to.
– Children are caught in a merciless cycle of violence, flight and loss, says the organization's Sudan director Sheldon Yett, according to a press release.
On Monday, the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) condemned the violence in Sudan, including the widespread sexual violence.
Sudan's army and the paramilitary RSF have been fighting each other since April 2023. In total, at least 59,000 people have been killed since the outbreak of the war.
