Third drone alert in three days in Romania: Unacceptable

For the third day in a row, the Romanian Air Force has shot down Russian drones that entered their territory, AFP reports.

– It is unacceptable that Russia continues to violate Romania's airspace, which is also NATO and EU airspace, writes President Nicusor Dan on X.

Just as in recent days, the drones were shot down by an F16 plane over the water off the coast of Romania.

According to the president, the drones are of the Shahed type, which Russia uses in the war in Ukraine.

Troy Jackson replaces Platner in the Senate election in Maine

Former senator Troy Jackson will take the place of rape accused Graham Platner for the Democrats in the Senate election in Maine, writes the New York Times.

The victory was obvious after the vote on Saturday, 566 votes to five.

"Thank you, Maine. In 101 days we will defeat Susan Collins and reclaim our seat in the Senate. Let's get to work," he writes on X.

The fires outside Madrid continue to rage, but the rescue service is said to have brought some under control, writes TT, citing El País.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Sunday that the rescue mission has some intense hours ahead. He noted that progress had been made during the night.

According to authorities, 77,000 hectares of land have been ravaged by fire around the capital. Tens of thousands are still evacuated and it will be some time before they can return to their homes.

Meanwhile, new fires have broken out in other parts of the country. North of Valencia, 15,000 people have been forced to leave their homes after rescue services there were confronted with a forest fire.

Businessmen sue desert town for right to water

Businessman Sebastian Rucci, who applied for permission to build a data center in the desert town of Imperial in Southern California, is suing local authorities after he was denied access to the town's fresh water, writes the Economic Times.

Rucci wants to build an 88,258 square meter facility. He has promised that the project will contribute tens of millions in annual tax revenue. He has also claimed to have an agreement with Google and assured that he will not need any water to cool his facility.

Now he has changed his mind and is suddenly demanding his right to pump a billion liters of water out of the Colorado River.

Sebastian Rucci, who previously ran strip clubs and drug rehabilitation clinics, admits that he has never built a data center before. However, he is self-taught from YouTube, he tells the Wall Street Journal.

“Governments don’t always do things correctly and if you are disadvantaged, you need to learn to use the legal system,” he says. 

British pub death: Two a day forced to close

The number of pubs in Britain has decreased by almost a quarter since the turn of the millennium, writes CNN. Between January and March of this year alone, 161 pubs closed their doors for the last time, which gives an average of almost two pubs closed a day.

Price increases, taxes and, not least, social factors are mentioned as explanations. The younger generation finds other social contexts and pub visits do not fit into the image of a happy life that many want to portray on social media, says sociologist Thomas Thurnell-Read.
