Opposition in Tanzania: 51 accused of terrorism

51 officials from the opposition in Tanzania have been arrested and charged with terrorism, the country's largest opposition party said, according to the AP. The party accuses the government of using the legal system to threaten dissidents.

They now face ten years to life in prison.

The officials were arrested ahead of a planned demonstration that was to take place on July 7. The organizers' goal is democratic reform, after Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan won the disputed election in October with 98 percent of the vote. In June, the government banned all political meetings, citing security concerns.

Tanzania’s main opposition party, Chadema, is furious that 51 officials have been charged with terrorism after they were arrested in connection with a demonstration in early July, reports the AP. Among those arrested is party leader Tundu Lissu.

According to John Heche, Chadema’s vice-chairman, Lissu has been denied basic rights in detention. Since he is accused of terrorism, he cannot be released on bail.

“I urge all Tanzanians to unite and stand up against blackmail and threats,” says John Heche.
