Dozens dead in floods and landslides in India
At least 50 people have died and 700,000 have been forced to flee their homes due to floods and landslides after monsoon rains in India.
The rain water has flooded the Brahmaputra river, which has swept away homes and forced hundreds of thousands to seek shelter in government relief camps. According to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, those affected will receive food and other necessities.
Nearly 900 villages have been flooded and more than 7,000 homes are without electricity, he said.
The work to rescue stranded residents continues.
Experts have determined that human-caused climate change is worsening monsoons in South Asia. Rains that were once more predictable now come in erratic bursts, dumping extreme amounts of water in short periods.
