Danish Arctic ships not in place in Greenland
The Danish navy has four patrol frigates for presence in the North Atlantic and the waters around the Faroe Islands and Greenland – but none of them has been in place off Greenland in almost three weeks, reports DR.
Three of them are at berth in Denmark and the fourth has been on a trip to Canada since August 7, position data shows.
The ships should, among other things, be able to function as rescue platforms at sea. According to the Rescue Council, a minimum requirement is that at least one such ship should be available off Greenland all year round.
– It's about human lives. It's about the safety of Greenlanders in everyday life, when we send people out to sea, says Naaja Nathanielsen, member of parliament for the Inuit Ataqatigiit (IA) party, to DR.
The Armed Forces have previously referred to having smaller ships on site.
