Analysis: Trump's unexpected announcement shakes Asia

Donald Trump's decision to cancel planned military exercises with South Korea is causing concern among other Asian countries, several Reuters writers write in an analysis.

Japan worries about ending up in Trump's firing line, Taiwan is closely monitoring the upcoming US-China meeting and India is becoming increasingly uncertain about what strategic role they play for the president, they write.

SVT's Stefan Åsberg notes that the South Korean government officially says that Trump's rapprochement with North Korea gives diplomacy a greater chance. But beneath the surface there is concern and a "deep domestic political conflict." Left-wing forces want dialogue while conservatives want to see military deterrence in relations with the neighboring country.

Poll: Trust in Trump continues to plummet

American voters' trust in Donald Trump has reached a new low, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.

65 percent say they have no trust in the president. This is an increase of 24 percentage points since he took office, and an increase of 4 percentage points in the past month.

The same poll shows that an increasing proportion – more than eight in ten – believe that the Iran war will not end anytime soon.

Report: New oil damages the climate and the economy

The UK's plans for increased oil and gas production would not only hit the climate but also be an economic loss in the long term, according to an analysis by Imperial College University in London. The Guardian reports.

The increased carbon dioxide emissions would, according to calculations, lead to economic damage of hundreds of billions of pounds in the coming decades.

According to the newspaper, this is probably an underestimate, as the analysis does not take into account factors such as rising sea levels and extreme weather. One of the arguments for the plans has been that it would be a plus deal, as household energy costs would be reduced and more jobs would be created.
