Nearly 90 dead in junta airstrikes in August

A total of 88 people, including twelve children, have been killed in a wave of airstrikes carried out by the military junta in Myanmar during the month of August, the country's opposition says.

The military junta carried out hundreds of airstrikes at the same time as large parts of the country were hit by floods in August.

According to data compiled by the opposition Myanmar's National Unity Government (NUG), 239 airstrikes were carried out between August 8 and 23 against eleven regions.

The central region of Sagaing was hit hard, with nearly 40 people killed, and a school and two hospitals completely destroyed in the wave of attacks.

The EU has decided to provide an additional €10.5 million (around SEK 120 million) in humanitarian aid in response to the junta's escalation of violence.

Civil war has plagued Myanmar since 2021.
