The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have been disbanded, says its leader Mazlom Abdi.

– We announce today that the mission of the Syrian Democratic Forces is over and declare, with full responsibility, their disbandment as an independent military force, Abdi said in a televised speech from the presidential palace in Damascus.

The SDF announced last week that integration with the regime in Damascus has been completed and that the Syrian government and the SDF had agreed to incorporate the Kurdish administration into the regime.

Earlier this year, the new central government in Syria signed an integration agreement with the country's Kurds. Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa has promised, among other things, to incorporate Kurdish forces into the government army, respect the rights of the Kurds and make Kurdish an official language in Syria.
