Trump in naval feud: “Clown”
The dispute with Canada is escalating.
Now Donald Trump is threatening to change the name of Lake Ontario.
“Lake America,” he writes on Truth Social.
On Monday, Donald Trump threatened to raise tariffs on Canadian trucks, cars and auto parts by 50 percent.
“Someone should get these clowns to step in. Otherwise, the consequences for Canada will be MUCH WORSE,” Trump writes on Truth Social.
The announcement comes after negotiations on a new trade agreement stalled. Ontario Premier Doug Ford addressed the new tariff threat during a radio interview in Toronto, reports CBC News.
– Kiss my ass, he says.
According to Ford, Canada may respond with its own tariffs and reintroduce a fee on electricity that Ontario exports to the United States.
However, it did not take long before Trump responded again and attacked Ford.
“A lot of talk from Doug Ford who is the premier of the Canadian province of Ontario, but who is better known as the less charismatic, intelligent and overall unimpressive brother of the late, great Rob Ford,” Trump writes.
Then Trump threw in another firebrand.
“The United States is seriously considering changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake of the Americas because we no longer expect there to be any business with Ontario. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”, he writes.
On Tuesday evening, Canada's official response came. Tariffs on several goods are being increased by 50 percent. This applies to goods such as steel, dairy products and wood.
“We cannot control the decisions made in Washington, but we can control the decisions we make here at home,” said Industry Minister Mélanie Joly during a press conference.
