Trump threatens to raise auto tariffs against Canada to 50 percent

The United States will raise tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks and vehicle parts to 50 percent starting at the turn of the year, President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social. This escalates the tariff war between the countries since trade talks broke down on Friday.

"Canada has been blowing the US away for years," Trump wrote, adding that the country's "ridiculously high" tariffs on US agricultural products have hurt "American patriots."

Trump has previously threatened to raise auto tariffs from the current 25 percent. Tariffs on steel are already 50 percent.

Canada has refused to bow to Trump's demands and promises to support the industries affected by the tariffs, Prime Minister Mark Carney said this weekend.
