Over 30 degrees Celsius for 135 million Europeans

More than 135 million Europeans – mainly in France, Italy, Spain and the UK – are expected to experience temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius on Thursday as the latest heatwave on the continent draws in.

In addition, temperatures are expected to exceed 30 degrees Celsius for almost three in five Europeans, or around 340 million people.

Europe is the continent on Earth that is warming the fastest and some areas are ill-equipped to cope with hot weather.

Recurrent heatwaves and droughts have contributed to a historically hot summer in Europe, with widespread forest fires and thousands of deaths.
