Xi has landed in the US – welcomed by Trump

Chinese President Xi Jinping has landed in the US. Donald Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, personally welcomed him at the Joint Base Andrews military base.

This is an unusually welcoming gesture from a US president.

When Trump visited Beijing in May, he had to settle for being welcomed by China's vice president at the airport.

"I will discuss almost everything with him (Xi)," Trump said ahead of the meeting.

"Everything" in this case could refer to many different topics. The trade war is a key issue where no lasting agreement has been secured, and regarding the war in Iran, China wants to avoid US sanctions against countries that do business with Iran.

The threat of a military confrontation over Taiwan also looms over the summit.

However, of all the issues that have strained the relationship between the superpowers, AI appears to be the one that will take center stage during the summit.

The US and China are at the forefront of development, competing to be the best and the fastest.
