Oligarch vs. tourists in dispute over sanctions
France and Slovakia want to lift EU sanctions against the Russian-Uzbek oligarch Alisher Usmanov.
The counter-demand: stop more Russian tourists from entering.
At an extraordinary meeting this afternoon, EU ambassadors hope to reach an agreement on extending sanctions against the more than 3,000 individuals accused of activities supporting the Russian war and the occupation of parts of Ukraine.
A decision was expected weeks ago but has stalled due to demands from Slovakia and France to lift sanctions against the metals and technology oligarch Usmanov.
According to the news site Euractiv, a window of opportunity for this has now opened—provided France agrees to stricter general visa requirements for Russian citizens.
France and Italy together account for more than half of the Russian visas to the EU granted annually.
