Trump administration: No "right" to cover the White House
Access to the White House is "a privilege, not a right."
This is stated by the Department of Justice in a court filing regarding the case that will determine whether US President Donald Trump has the right to bar media outlets.
The filing was submitted late Tuesday. It argues that certain media outlets' coverage of the Iran war and the President's construction of a banquet hall at the White House could pose a threat to national security, CNN and The New York Times.
Trump has claimed that major media outlets—specifically CNN, MSNBC, and Politico—spread "fake news" and has barred them from the White House.
A federal judge in Washington, D.C., is expected to rule on Wednesday regarding the lawsuit filed by the three media outlets following the ban imposed last Friday. In the suit, the media organizations argue that the ban is unconstitutional, as it violates freedom of the press.
