Trump on cancelled trips: "You’re disgusting"
With only days left until the midterm elections, US President Donald Trump is cancelling several campaign rallies. A reporter who asked if health reasons were the explanation was met with a sharp rebuke, in a clip that has since gone viral.
"I feel perfect. You’re disgusting—get in shape yourself; you look terrible," Trump said.
The cancelled trips were scheduled for this weekend to Kansas and Iowa—two traditionally Republican states where the race for the Senate has become unexpectedly tight.
Instead, he is holding televised events for candidates in 19 states—a move intended, according to media reports, to "reach more voters in the limited time remaining."
When a Reuters reporter asked the 81-year-old Trump whether his health had anything to do with the cancelled trips, he lashed out, replying, "I’m not going to Kansas because I don’t feel I need to." The President also berated the Reuters reporter in a clip that has now gone viral.
"You’re sick for asking that question."
Trump’s popularity has declined in recent months, partly due to the war in Iran. Party representatives suggest there is a risk that his presence could become a liability for congressional candidates.
"He hasn’t improved support anywhere," a high-ranking Republican told CNN.
