Five people were killed in Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, according to the civil defense service in the Hamas-controlled territory.

“Three people were killed and several others were injured, some seriously,” said Mahmud Bassal, a spokesperson for the civil defense, adding that the incident involved a drone strike in Rafah, in the south.

The local hospital reported receiving three bodies and 15 injured individuals, one of whom later died.

In a separate strike on Khan Yunis, also located in southern Gaza, another person was killed.

In a comment to AFP, the Israeli military stated that it had “struck terrorists” and that further information would be provided later.

More than 1,500 people are reported to have been killed in Israeli attacks over the past year, a period during which a formal ceasefire was supposed to be in effect in Gaza.
