Outrage as suspected neo-Nazi is acquitted
A suspected neo-Nazi has been acquitted of charges related to the display of illegal Nazi symbols and the possession of Nazi propaganda. The acquittal has sparked outrage in Austria.
The fact that the 42-year-old man was cleared of all charges concerning neo-Nazism was met with surprise, which has since turned to anger—especially given that police had seized Nazi propaganda from him, and he was reportedly seen wearing a vest bearing SS symbols.
The Mauthausen Committee (MKÖ), an organization that campaigns against Nazism, has described the verdict as “a scandal of the highest order,” accusing the presiding judge of displaying clear sympathies toward the 42-year-old during the trial.
“This is not merely a case of incompetence; it is evident that a right-wing shift has reached parts of the judiciary,” the MKÖ stated, calling on the Ministry of Justice to review the enforcement of laws that prohibit Nazi-related activities.
