Flares and smoke in parliament: "Resign!"
Flares and smoke bombs were ignited during a session of the Albanian parliament, amid demands for the Prime Minister’s resignation.
Opposition politicians attempted to disrupt a vote during a regular parliamentary session on Thursday. They banged on tables and threw objects at Prime Minister Edi Rama. They then lit red flares and smoke bombs that emitted blue smoke.
"Resign, Rama!" the members chanted, holding up images that allegedly showed protesters being assaulted by police.
Albanians have been demonstrating for over a week, calling for investment in education and protesting against the high cost of living. The situation has escalated into numerous violent clashes.
Edi Rama has blamed "foreign actors" for orchestrating the unrest. The opposition argues that he is attempting to sweep the situation under the rug. The protest movement accuses both the government and the opposition of widespread corruption.
