Midterm Elections The US Election Campaign

Governor demands investigation into alleged name-based trick

Alaska’s Republican Governor Mike Dunleavy is calling for an investigation into Democrat Mary Peltola’s Senate campaign, he writes on X.

The background is that the campaign allegedly recruited a retiree named Dan Sullivan with the aim of causing voters to confuse him with the incumbent Republican senator of the same name.

“Deliberately deceiving voters into voting for someone else is an assault on the integrity of the election,” Dunleavy writes on X.

According to him, the investigation should determine whether the campaign has broken the law. Peltola’s campaign denies any involvement.

Trump demands prosecution following Sullivan revelation

Donald Trump is demanding that the Democratic Senate candidate in Alaska, Mary Peltola, be prosecuted following revelations that her campaign was involved in recruiting a candidate who shares the same name as the incumbent Republican Senator Dan Sullivan, US media report.

Last week, the President also instructed the Department of Justice to preemptively challenge a potential Republican loss in the Alaska election.

“Peltola should face the legal and political consequences of what she has done,” the President wrote at the time on Truth Social.

According to a report by The New York Times, Peltola’s staff was tasked with recruiting an individual named Dan Sullivan in order to confuse voters and split the vote in the primary election.

Analysis: Democrats gave Trump exactly what he wanted

During his campaign rallies ahead of the midterm elections, Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed that Democrats are cheating, even singling out individual election workers. But by calling for the prosecution of Alaska Democrat Mary Peltola, he is taking things a step further, the AP reports.

“It suggests he is preparing to use his presidential power to try to overturn a potential election defeat,” the news agency writes.

According to The New York Times, Peltola’s staff was tasked with recruiting an individual named Dan Sullivan to confuse voters and split the vote in the primary election.

This revelation has provided Trump with a unique opportunity to shift the focus away from his dismal poll numbers and high fuel prices, writes CNN’s Stephen Collinson in an analysis.

“Democrats in Alaska gave Donald Trump exactly what he wanted.”
