The Debate on Screen Time

Impatient EU Leaders Introduce Their Own Social Media Rules

While awaiting the adoption of an EU proposal for a 13-year age limit on social media, several European countries are moving ahead with their own age restrictions. Greece, Portugal, and Italy are among those working to implement new legislation, reports Politico.

“Protecting children is an urgent matter that requires swift and concrete action,” says a spokesperson for the Greek Ministry of Digital Governance, adding that the legislation should be viewed as “a complement” to EU law.

It is expected to take more than a year for EU member states to reach an agreement on the content and wording of the new legislation.

Screen-Free Dinners Tested in Sardinia

Fifteen restaurants in Sardinia are temporarily prohibiting families from using phones and tablets at the dining table, reports The Guardian.

The month-long pilot project is spearheaded by the Italian island’s ombudsman for children, Anna Cau, with the aim of encouraging conversation and reducing screen dependency.

After handing over their mobile phones to the restaurant staff, families receive a “reunion kit” in return, containing games and sketchpads to use during the meal.
