Analysis: In the end, Modi could not duck anymore  

 

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi passed the vote of confidence in the country's parliament, but perhaps it is still a sign of a sprained leader?  

 

The Guardian's Michael Safi paints a picture of a prime minister who has tried to avoid dealing with the conflict in Manipur, perhaps because he does not want to be associated with it.  

 

But with the vote of confidence, he finally had to, writes Safi, although it was still reluctant: 

 

"The opposition hopes that the spectacle can force Modi to take responsibility for the problem".  

 

And if he does, the outcome of next year's election could be a very different story than many expected.  

 

Modi is one of the most popular leaders India has ever had. The conflict that has flared up in the state of Manipur, and which has cost both human life and suffering, may, however, have a high price for the 72-year-old leader, believes CNN's Rhea Mogul. And she is not alone in that, she notes:  

 

"Analysts say that the new alliance of opposition parties has shaken the balance of power, setting the stage for a dramatic clash next year".

Modi weathers crisis of confidence – expected to act in Manipur  

 

India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, passed a vote of confidence in parliament on Thursday, writes AFP.  

 

The vote was sought by the opposition over Modi's handling of the ongoing unrest in Manipur, in the country's northeast.  

 

The prime minister has been accused of ignoring the conflict, described as one of the country's worst crises in years. This is considered particularly worrying as his own party is in power in the state.  

 

That the confidence vote would fail was expected, given Modi's dominance in parliament. However, the people behind it hope that it will force the prime minister to focus more on what is happening in Manipur going forward, AP reports. 

 

Since the beginning of May, more than 150 people have died and 50,000 have been forced to leave their homes after different ethnicities clashed in the state.
