Analysis: US double standards on Ukraine and Gaza could affect the world for decades
The American president's double standards regarding the wars in Gaza and Ukraine may have consequences for world politics for decades to come, writes The Guardian's Patrick Wintour in an analysis.
Support for Ukraine is a matter of heart for many leaders in the West. This is contrasted with Joe Biden coming out early and supporting Israel's right to attack Gaza after the terrorist attack in October. In the so-called global south, it is seen by many as a double standard - not least because, for some, Palestine is a symbol of the fight against an unjust world order, according to Wintour.
As an example, he mentions Egypt's former foreign minister who said that the global south is losing faith in the values that the West has spread over the years. The entire world order is at risk of collapsing, is the thesis.
According to New York Times reporter Michael Crowley, the US is now diplomatically isolated and on the defensive as a result of its handling of the Gaza war. Crowley cites American career diplomat Barbara Bodine who warns that the United States has lost the good standing it won through its clear response to Russia's aggression in Ukraine.
The double standards over Gaza may also make it more difficult for Biden to gain support for UN resolutions intended to support Ukraine.
"This is great news for the Russian government," writes Crowley.

New attacks in the Red Sea - USA: Shot down several drones
On Tuesday alone, the United States shot down a total of 17 drones and robots fired by Houthi rebels in Yemen against shipping in the Red Sea, the US Department of Defense said according to AFP.
The attacks are said to have been carried out within a period of ten hours and the Iran-backed rebels have claimed at least two attacks, one a robot attack on a ship and the other with drones on targets in Israel. There are no reports of anyone being injured.
India has deployed three military ships in the Arabian Sea after a Japanese-owned ship was attacked off India's coast on Monday, CNN writes. The US accuses Iran of being behind that attack, which Tehran denies.
The Houthi rebels have threatened that the attacks will continue until Israel's attacks in Gaza stop.

Israel: Ongoing multi-front war - no enemy is safe
Israel's Defense Minister Yoav Gallant says that the war is being waged on several different fronts and points out, among other things, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran and Syria as threats.
He predicts that a "long and hard" war lies ahead for Israel, and emphasizes that anyone who "acts against" the country is a potential military target, writes the Jerusalem Post.
- We were brutally and barbarically attacked to discourage us from living here. We must make it clear that this will not go unpunished.
