The state of Maine follows Colorado and stops Donald Trump from being on the primary ballot.

But the last word will come from the country's highest court.

- It would be sensational if you block a candidate in this way. But one must not forget that it is also a candidate who is very unusual, says Dag Blanck, professor of North American studies at Uppsala University.

Donald Trump's connections to storming Congress in January 2021 is why he may now be barred from being on the primary ballot.

The legal rule in the country's constitution is that people who have participated in rebellion cannot be elected. But how the law should be interpreted is uncharted territory because it has yet to be used, at least not when it comes to presidential candidates.

Dag Blanck, professor of North American studies at Uppsala University, believes that it is very difficult to speculate on what the country's highest court will come to.

- You can reason in different ways. Some interpret it literally and according to every letter in the constitution and others believe that you have to understand and interpret the constitution according to the times we live in today.

- What is often brought up in the discussion is that he is not convicted of anything, but he is only accused, says Dag Blanck.

Decisions need to be made shortly

He believes there would be a huge uproar and protests from supporters if Trump were to be stopped. And that the situation would become even more tense and polarized. He believes that the judges are of course also human and can weigh such things into their thoughts.

The country's highest court needs to take a position on this before the primary elections start in the spring.

- It would be sensational if you block a candidate in this way. But one must not forget that it is also a candidate who is very unusual, says Dag Blanck.

Donald Trump.
