Ukraine denies reports: “No elections are being prepared”

Ukraine denies reports that Volodymyr Zelensky has called a meeting to begin preparing for an election this summer after a possible ceasefire, according to the Ukrainian public service Suspilne.

“No elections are being prepared and no preparations are being made. All parliamentary parties and groups have agreed that elections should be held six months after the lifting of the state of emergency. Our position has not changed since then,” says David Arakhamia, group leader of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s Servant of the People party.

Yesterday, The Economist published sources claiming that Ukraine was preparing for a presidential election this summer, provided that a ceasefire was established before then.

Ukraine: Will work with US on mineral deal

Ukraine will work with the US to develop a mutually acceptable text for a mineral deal that the two countries can sign, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on Tuesday, according to Reuters.

A round of consultations on a new draft of the mineral deal has already taken place and a deal that provides a strong US business presence in Ukraine would contribute to Ukraine's security infrastructure, Sybiha said at a press conference.

Report: Ukraine almost driven out of Kursk region

In March, the Ukrainian-controlled area in Kursk, Russia, decreased from 400 to 80 square kilometers, according to AFP's analysis of data from the ISW think tank.

In total, Ukraine now controls six percent of the territory it held at the height of the offensive. The offensive began in August last year, and within two weeks Ukraine had captured around 1,300 square kilometers.

At the same time, the Russian offensive in eastern Ukraine has slowed for the fourth month in a row. In March, Russia seized 240 square kilometers of Ukrainian land.

Expert: Shadow fleet finances the war in Ukraine

Over 90 percent of all Russian crude oil is now transported by so-called shadow ships, the purpose of which is to circumvent sanctions against Russia. This is reported by DN, which has examined the traffic, which often passes through the Baltic Sea.

In total, the shadow fleet is estimated to bring in over 1,000 billion kronor to the Russian treasury each year.

– The money goes to the war in Ukraine in one way or another, says Henrik Wachtmeister, a researcher in global energy systems at Uppsala University, to the newspaper.
