Venezuela's ousted President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores are doing well and are "calm," the couple said in a first X post from their New York jail.

"All the support fills our souls and strengthens us spiritually," they said in a greeting to their supporters published on Maduro's X account.

It is unclear who made the post on their behalf, however.

Maduro and Flores have been held in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn for nearly three months. A source close to the Venezuelan regime told AFP that Maduro reads the Bible and is called “president” by some of his fellow prisoners.

He is only allowed to speak by phone with his family and lawyers – and for a maximum of 15 minutes per call, according to the source.

The Maduros were captured in their home by US forces in a night raid in the Venezuelan capital Caracas in early January.
