More than a million people have been forced from their homes in Lebanon. Now the UN refugee agency is warning that the country is at risk of suffering a humanitarian disaster.

– More than 136,000 displaced people are staying in 660 shelters, most of them schools that are filled beyond capacity, said Karolina Lindholm Billin, UNHCR's representative in the region, to reporters on Friday.

She also says that $60 million is needed to scale up the efforts.

The Iranian-backed Hezbollah militia attacked Israel on March 2, drawing Lebanon into the ongoing war in the region. Since then, Israel, which has violated the ceasefire it signed with Hezbollah in November 2024 on an almost daily basis, has carried out large-scale attacks on the country.

Earlier this week, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz claimed that Israel will control all of southern Lebanon up to the Litani River.
