Behind the scenes, he is being singled out by the US as a possible leader and collaborator.

Now the Iranian speaker is threatening to set US soldiers on fire.

"We are clearly seeing the effects of fear and terror in the enemy army," says Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.

"He is a hot candidate."

That's what a White House employee tells Politico - about the man who has repeatedly threatened the US and its allies with revenge.

64-year-old Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has long been considered one of Iran's most influential politicians, with strong connections to the Iranian military.

He has a long career in the Iranian regime behind him. Fighter pilot, commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Iran's police chief are some of the jobs he has held.

Pointed out as successor

Between 2005 and 2017, Ghalibaf was mayor of Tehran. He has also run for president three times: in 2005, 2013 and 2017. He became speaker in 2020.

The source who describes Ghalibaf as a "hot candidate" is not alone. Several people within US President Donald Trump's administration have promoted him as a potential Iranian leader, several media outlets report.

“Will set them on fire”

The speaker himself does not seem to like the new label of US-hugger:

“The Iranian people demand a complete and humiliating punishment of the attackers,” he wrote on X earlier this week, describing the reports of negotiations as fake news.

Meanwhile, the US is preparing for a weeks-long ground invasion of Iran, sources told the Washington Post. Thousands of troops are now pouring into the Middle East, ready for the next phase of the war.

“The enemy is sending open messages of negotiations and dialogue and secretly planning a ground offensive,” Bagher Ghalibaf responded in a statement, according to Al Jazeera.

“Unaware that our men are waiting for American soldiers to arrive on the ground to set them on fire and punish their regional partners forever.”
