After Trump's promise: The attacks continue
The fighting in Lebanon is now over.
That's what Donald Trump promised on Monday.
That's not what happened.
At least four people have been killed in Israeli attacks on several locations in southern Lebanon - the day after the US president announced that the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah would cease, Lebanese media report.
A spokesman for the Israeli military confirms that attacks are ongoing.
"Because Hezbollah, which is labeled a terrorist group, has violated the ceasefire, the military is forced to act forcefully against them," he writes in a post on X along with a warning to the residents of the city of Nabatieh.
“Fucking lunatic”
Aircraft alarms have sounded in northern Israel after a suspected Hezbollah drone was identified in southern Lebanon, The Times of Israel reports.
Already on Monday, Donald Trump was furious with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to information to Axios. At that time, Iranian media reported that Iran was canceling all peace talks with the United States.
The reason: Israel's escalation in Lebanon.
– You are a fucking lunatic, Trump is said to have told Netanyahu in a phone call.
Will avoid Beirut
The same day, he spoke with representatives of Hezbollah. After that, Trump wrote on Truth Social:
“They agreed to stop all shelling – that Israel will not attack them and that they will not attack Israel.”
According to Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, the military will continue to operate in what the country calls a “security zone” in southern Lebanon, the Washington Post reports. Heavy attacks on the capital Beirut – other than targeted attacks – will be avoided, according to US demands.
Meanwhile, a new round of talks is underway on Tuesday with the Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors in Washington. It is the fourth meeting between the countries since the formal ceasefire began in April of this year.
