Danish government negotiations

Denmark's new government complete – more women than men

Just over two months after the election in Denmark, it is clear who is part of the country's new government. According to a press release, the ministerial staff consists of a total of 21 ministers, of which eleven are women and ten are men.

Lars Løkke Rasmussen will remain as Minister of Foreign Affairs, while former Minister of Justice Peter Hummelgaard will instead become Minister of Finance. The new Minister of Justice will be Nicolai Wammen. Jeppe Bruus will become Minister of Defense and Pia Olsen Dyhr will be given the role of Minister of Economy and the Interior.

The government is Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's third in order and is being presented after her party, the Social Democrats, reached an agreement with the Radical Left, the Socialist People's Party and the Moderates to form a new government.

The government will also be presented at a press conference at 10:00.

Analysis: The ministerial reshuffle shows that the S has a new crown prince

Denmark's new government contains several big surprises, writes Berlingske's political commentator Bent Winther in an analysis.

He mentions, among other things, former Minister of Justice Peter Hummelgaard (S), who will switch places with Nicolai Wammen (S) and become the new Minister of Finance.

"It is a huge surprise. It will inevitably be interpreted as Mette Frederiksen trying to make him her successor. It could trigger a power struggle within the party," writes Winther.

That Wammen (S) will instead become Minister of Justice Winther interprets as a demotion.

Politiken's political commentator Elisabet Svane also focuses on the ministerial reshuffle. She believes that Frederiksen's choice to make Hummelgaard Minister of Finance is a statement and a signal for who she sees as her crown prince.

- This is a signal that will be perceived very clearly within the Social Democrats, she says in an analysis.
