The political situation in Zimbabwe
Ministers want to scrap Zimbabwe's general elections

Zimbabwe's Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi has submitted a bill that aims to extend the president's term, reports the AP.

83-year-old President Emmerson Mnangagwa's second and final term would then expire in 2030, instead of 2028.

The bill would also overturn the political system, as it also aims to change how presidential elections are held. If Ziyambi Ziyambi's proposal is voted through, future presidents would no longer be elected by the people, but by the country's parliament.

Earlier this year, the BBC reported that opposition politicians in the country were concerned about just such a development, when the proposal began to be aired.

- It is a coup, a slow one that is developing in Zimbabwe, former Finance Minister Tendai Biti told the BBC.
