Political situation in Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso's military breaks all ties with France

Burkina Faso's military government breaks diplomatic ties with former colonial power France, reports AP. France has been Burkina Faso's main security partner and main donor since independence.

The military junta justifies the decision with what it calls "obvious neocolonial ambitions" on the French side. They also claim, without evidence, that France has supported terrorists in Burkina Faso.

Relations between the countries have gradually deteriorated in recent years. In 2023, the junta asked France to recall its ambassador and the following year several diplomats were expelled.

France: "Hostile and unfounded" to break ties

The French are sharply criticizing Burkina Faso's decision to break all diplomatic ties with France, writes AFP.

In a statement, the French Foreign Ministry called the decision “hostile and unfounded” and wrote that it shows a “worrying shift” in the Burkinabe government.

Former colonial power France was Burkina Faso’s main international partner until the military took power in 2022. Since then, the relationship has gradually deteriorated.
