Russian invasion The world's response

Lukashenko: Russia and Ukraine must compromise

Belarusian dictator Aleksandr Lukashenko, who is a close ally of Vladimir Putin, says that Russia and Ukraine must compromise to reach a peaceful end to the war in an interview with Al Arabiya.

He also apologizes for previous statements about Volodymyr Zelenskyj, and says that Belarus is "extremely vulnerable" if Ukraine were to attack.

Military analyst Jörgen Elfving tells DN that Lukashenko's statement may be a sign that he has realized that the war is not going so well for Russia. It may also be an attempt to downplay his own role, or improve relations with the United States.

But it is not impossible that Lukashenko has coordinated his answers with Russia first, and that it is in fact a way for the Kremlin to read the reactions in the West, he says.
