Peace Talks
Iran: Israel's Withdrawal from Lebanon is a Requirement for the Agreement
The peace agreement must include a requirement for Israel to withdraw from Lebanon, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said, according to the AP.
- If Israel does not withdraw from areas it occupied during this war, the war has not ended, he said.
It is a condition that Israel has already refused to agree to, and it could undermine the entire agreement.
According to an anonymous American source to the AP, the agreement does not contain any such condition.
Iran's Nuclear Program
von der Leyen: Iran must change its behavior
Iran must change its behavior before the EU can lift some of its sanctions, says European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, according to Reuters.
- Sanctions are there to change behavior. So if behavior changes in a credible and verifiable way, the sanctions can be lifted, she says.
Previously, countries such as the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy have announced that they are ready to lift sanctions against Iran in exchange for Iran taking clear steps to guarantee that it never develops nuclear weapons.
Oil Market
Sources: Agreement allows Iran to immediately start selling oil
The US will allow Iran to immediately start selling oil and fuel as part of the peace agreement, sources with insight told the Wall Street Journal.
The aim is to give Tehran a financial incentive to end the conflict, according to the sources.
The provision on exemptions from sanctions against oil sales will also cover banking services, transportation and insurance needed to facilitate the sales.
